698

The Jamaica Constabulary Force has confirmed that 26-year-old Tyra Spaulding, a former Miss Universe Jamaica contestant, was found dead at her home on Tuesday, September 23, around 6:55 pm. Spaulding, a model and accountant, was discovered hanging from her bed frame with a pink curtain tied around her neck. The police are investigating the incident as a suspected case of suicide.¹

A Promising Life Cut Short

Spaulding was a beloved finalist in the 2023 Miss Universe Jamaica competition, remembered for her vibrant personality, intelligence, and inspiring presence. The Miss Universe Jamaica Organization expressed deep sadness over her passing, describing her as “more than a contestant; she was a vibrant, intelligent and inspiring young woman whose grace and spirit touched everyone she met.” The organization extended condolences to her family, friends, and loved ones, paying tribute to her remarkable life and legacy.²

Mental Health Advocacy

Spaulding was also an advocate for mental health and suicide prevention, openly sharing her struggles with intrusive thoughts and suicidal ideation. In a YouTube video titled “Don’t Be Sad,” she candidly discussed her internal battle, saying, “I’m fighting for my life… my mind is trying to kill me.” Her death has sparked renewed conversations about mental health awareness and the importance of seeking help.³
