A deadly attack by Boko Haram insurgents in Monguno, Borno State, has claimed the lives of a Commanding Officer and six soldiers, the Nigerian Army has confirmed.
The attack occurred late on April 12 at the Charlie 13 location, where troops of Sector 3 were stationed. According to Operation Hadin Kai, the military’s response to the insurgency, the attackers launched an isolated terrorist attack, but were met with fierce resistance from the troops.
In a statement, Operation Hadin Kai said the soldiers successfully repelled the assault, retaining control of the area. However, the Commanding Officer was killed when his vehicle struck an improvised explosive device while he was moving to assess the situation.
The Army has praised the Commanding Officer’s actions, describing them as courageous and exemplary. He led from the front and remained committed to the welfare of his troops, the statement noted.
Operation Hadin Kai has expressed its condolences to the families of the fallen soldiers, saying their sacrifice will not be forgotten. The military has not released the names of the deceased.
The attack is the latest in a series of violent incidents in Borno State, where Boko Haram has been waging an insurgency since 2009.
