The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has moved to reset its leadership by unveiling a 13-member caretaker National Working Committee, NWC, tasked with stabilizing the party and preparing it for the 2027 general elections.
The decision was reached at the party’s 103rd National Executive Committee, NEC, meeting. Former Minister of Special Duties, Kabiru Turaki, was named National Chairman of the caretaker team, with Taofeek Arapaja appointed as National Secretary.
The NEC meeting was convened by two-thirds of its 142 members and chaired pro-tem by Senator Adolphus Wabara, following his nomination and endorsement. Wabara commended party leaders and stakeholders for their resilience during recent internal crises, saying Nigerians still look to the PDP for credible leadership.
The NEC also urged the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to respect a Supreme Court judgment and update its records to reflect the party’s new leadership structure.
Board of Trustees Secretary, Aliyu Mu’azu Babangida, said the meeting was convened specifically to install an interim leadership capable of repositioning the party. Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, expressed confidence that the PDP would emerge stronger, urging members to remain committed and pledging support for the caretaker committee.
Accepting the role, Turaki assured members that the new leadership would restore unity, strengthen the party, and position it for future electoral success.
The move marks the PDP’s latest effort to resolve internal divisions, rebuild trust, and reassert itself as a formidable opposition ahead of 2027.
