The Benue State House of Assembly has suspended four of its members for six months over an alleged attempt to impeach Speaker Aondona Dajoh. The affected lawmakers are:
– Alfred Berger (Makurdi North)
– Terna Shimawua (Kian)
– Cyril Ekong (Obi)
– James Umoru (Apa)
The suspension follows a botched attempt by the lawmakers to unseat Speaker Dajoh, which the Assembly described as a direct affront to its leadership and internal order. As part of disciplinary measures, the four lawmakers will not participate in legislative activities for the next six months.
Leadership Changes
Following the suspension, the Assembly underwent leadership changes, including:
– Kennedy Angbo as the new Deputy Majority Leader
– Douglas Akya as the Deputy Chief Whip
– Elias Audu as the new House Spokesman
The Assembly also commenced the screening of five commissioner nominees, with two additional nominees, Ogwu Odeh and Imojime Tiza, scheduled to appear on a later date. The suspension has heightened political tension within the Assembly, with the leadership vowing not to tolerate acts that could destabilize the legislature.
