Cyber Crime: We Only Arrested Those Peddling Fake News – Force PRO, Adejobi

3

The spokesperson of the Nigeria Police Force, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, has denied claims that the police is using the Cybercrime act 2024 to witchhaunt specific persons in the country.

In a video shared online on Saturday, February 22, Adejobi stated that contrary to opinions, the police has not arrested anyone criticizing the government, the Inspector General of Police IGP  or the police in general. He said the police have only arrested and prosecuted those peddling fake news, misinformation and maligning people’s character.

‘’Spreading falsehood, disinformation, distortion of facts and the likes online is a criminal offence. Either it is online or you are printing it, whatever you want to do, please make sure you verify and get accurate fact of any issue you want to discuss.

Publishing or coming online, either as a content creator , blogger or journalist, you must make sure you verify your stories and possibly balance your story before you come online to peddle falsehood.

I want to put it on record that the Nigeria Police Force has not been witch-hunting anybody with the use or application of the Cybercrime Act 2024 as amended. We have not charged or arrested anybody for criticizing the government, the IGP or the police. No! Go and check the records.

We actually arrested and prosecuted those who are out there peddling falsehood, fake news, disinformation, misinformation to cause problem, discredit individuals , institutions, to malign and to kill people’s character .

Do not spread fake news! Do  not spread falsehood. Do not engage in misinformation or disinformation. There are criminal offences”
