US Urges Nigeria To Strengthen Protection For Christians After Kaduna Abduction

285

The US has urged Nigeria to step up efforts to protect Christian communities after over 170 worshippers were abducted in Kaduna State on January 18. The incident has sparked concerns about religiously motivated violence in the country. The abductors are demanding the return of 17 motorcycles, valued at ₦28.9 million, allegedly seized during military operations, in exchange for the victims’ release .

US Under Secretary for Political Affairs, Allison Hooker, emphasized Nigeria’s need to ensure Christians’ safety and freedom to practice their faith during a US-Nigeria Working Group meeting in Abuja. “Persistent attacks on religious communities undermine security gains and public confidence,” Hooker said, highlighting the importance of counterterrorism and holding perpetrators accountable .

Nigeria’s National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, acknowledged the security challenge and pledged intensified operations in affected areas. He described religiously motivated violence as unacceptable and assured that perpetrators would be brought to justice
