US National Counterterrorism Center Director Joseph Kent has resigned, citing his inability to support the ongoing war in Iran. In a letter to President Donald Trump posted on X, Kent stated that Iran posed no imminent threat to the United States and accused Israel and its lobby of pressuring the administration into starting the war.
Kent, a veteran with 11 combat deployments and a Gold Star husband who lost his wife in a war, expressed his support for Trump’s earlier foreign policy stance but emphasized that the current war serves no benefit to the American people. He urged Trump to reconsider the decision, stating that the time for bold action is now.
The resignation marks the first high-profile exit from the Trump administration over the Iran war. Intelligence officials were caught off guard by the news, and Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard has remained silent on the issue.
