Senate Debates Response To Alleged Xenophobic Attacks On Nigerians, Lawmakers Call For Sanctions, Review Of South African Business Ties

47

The Nigerian Senate on Monday debated possible government action in response to alleged xenophobic attacks on Nigerians in South Africa, with some lawmakers calling for sanctions and a review of business ties with South African companies.

The debate followed a motion raised under matters of urgent public importance, during which lawmakers expressed concern over repeated incidents of violence against Nigerians abroad. Several senators argued that Nigeria should take a stronger diplomatic and economic stance to protect its citizens.

During plenary, some lawmakers suggested that the Federal Government consider sanctions and a review of operations of South African-owned businesses in Nigeria, including telecommunications giant MTN and pay-TV operator DSTV. They said such measures would serve as a deterrent and signal Nigeria’s displeasure with the situation.

“The safety and dignity of Nigerians abroad must be defended through concrete actions,” one senator said during the debate. Others, however, cautioned against retaliatory economic measures, warning that such steps could have unintended consequences for Nigerian workers and consumers.

The Senate urged the Federal Government to engage South African authorities through diplomatic channels and to ensure that Nigerians affected by the attacks receive adequate protection and compensation. Lawmakers also called on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to provide a detailed report on the incidents and the government’s response.

South Africa has previously condemned xenophobic violence and said it is committed to protecting all foreign nationals. Nigerian officials have repeatedly raised concerns about the safety of citizens in the country following past outbreaks of violence.

The Senate resolution underscores growing frustration among Nigerian lawmakers over the recurring attacks. It remains to be seen whether the Federal Government will adopt any of the recommendations as policy.

No formal decision on sanctions or business restrictions was reached at the plenary.
