US President Donald Trump has announced that a large US naval force, including the USS Abraham Lincoln carrier strike group, is heading towards Iran amid escalating tensions. Trump stated that the force is being deployed “just in case” and may not be used, saying “we have a big flotilla going in that direction… maybe we won’t have to use it”.
The move comes after Iran’s Islamic Revolution Guards Corps warned the US and Israel to avoid any miscalculations, with chief commander Mohammad Pakpour stating that Iranian forces are “more prepared than ever” and ready to follow orders from Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
Tensions have been rising since Trump’s threats to intervene in Iran’s December-January protests, with Iran blaming the US and Israel for violence and casualties. Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi accused the US of giving plotters an incentive for “maximum bloodshed”
