The uncle of British-Nigerian boxer Anthony Joshua has appealed for leniency for the driver involved in a fatal crash that killed two of Joshua’s friends. Adeniyi Kayode, 46, was driving Joshua’s Lexus 570 SUV when it crashed into a truck on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway in December, killing Latif Ayodele and Sina Ghami.
Appearing before a Sagamu magistrate’s court, Kayode faced charges including dangerous driving causing death and driving without a valid licence. The case was adjourned until February 25.
Speaking to Punch, Joshua’s uncle Adedamola said the family doesn’t want Kayode jailed. “Our son (Joshua) is deep in religion and taking everything by faith, he won’t want anything to happen to the driver,” he said. “The family isn’t interested in him being jailed… an accident can happen anywhere in the world, so they should please spare this man.”
