Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has intensified efforts to sustain peace in the state by meeting with his predecessor and Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, alongside a large group of political leaders loyal to Wike. The closed-door meeting, held at the Port Harcourt residence of elder statesman Chief Ferdinand Alabraba, lasted until the early hours of Sunday.
This meeting comes after a valedictory session on Wednesday for members of the dissolved state cabinet, where Governor Fubara directed commissioners and appointees affected by the Supreme Court judgment on the Rivers political crisis to step aside. Eight other commissioners unaffected by the ruling have since resumed their duties.
Details of the meeting between Fubara and Wike’s allies remain undisclosed, but it’s believed both leaders are working together to uphold the peace accord brokered by President Bola Tinubu during the six-month emergency rule in the state. The collaboration aims to maintain stability and promote development in Rivers State, a crucial oil-producing region.¹ ²
The meeting was attended by prominent figures, including:
– *Key Attendees:*
– Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Martin Amaewhule
– Senators Barinada Mpigi, Magnus Abe, Wilson Ake, George Sekibo, and Olaka Nwogu
– Former ministers and lawmakers
– Party leaders, including PDP State Chairman Chukwuemeka Aaron
The effort to sustain peace in Rivers State is significant, given the state’s history of political tension. Both Fubara and Wike have reaffirmed their commitment to the peace process, with Wike stating he has no intention of influencing the selection of new commissioners.
