The Federal Government has announced the cancellation of the Independence Day parade scheduled for October 1, 2025, to mark Nigeria’s 65th anniversary. In a statement signed by Segun Imohiosen, Director of Information and Public Relations, the government emphasized that the decision does not diminish the significance of this milestone anniversary.
Reasoning Behind the Cancellation
Although the government did not provide a specific reason for the cancellation, it expressed regret for any inconvenience this may cause and assured citizens that other activities planned for the anniversary will proceed as scheduled. These include¹ ²:
– Presidential Broadcast: A traditional broadcast by the President to mark the occasion
– Cultural Programmes: Events showcasing Nigeria’s rich cultural heritage
– National Campus Debate: A grand finale of the debate, promoting critical thinking and patriotism among youths
Call to Support Reforms
The government urged Nigerians, members of the diplomatic community, and invited guests to continue supporting President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s reform agenda, aimed at building a stronger and more prosperous nation. This appeal is in line with the anniversary theme, “Nigeria @ 65: All Hands on Deck for a Greater Nation,” which emphasizes collective responsibility in nation-building.³
Anniversary Celebrations
Despite the parade cancellation, the government remains committed to celebrating Nigeria’s 65th year of independence with dignity and enthusiasm. The Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, encouraged citizens to reflect on the country’s progress and challenges while supporting the Renewed Hope Agenda.⁴
