The Mental and Environmental Development Initiative for Children (MEDIC), a registered NGO, is urging the Lagos State Government to intervene in the alleged seizure of its charitable property – a 20-foot recycling container valued at ₦44,046,500 (as of September 2024) at Elegushi Beach by Box Mall/SOL Beach management.
According to MEDIC Founder, Ms Doyinsola Ogunye, the organization is seeking government intervention as efforts to retrieve the container and other assets, including beautification trees planted at the beach, have failed. The controversy began in 2024 when the landlord partnered with SOL Beach by Box Mall without notice to MEDIC, leading to demands for removal of the container donated by Nigerian Bottling Company.
MEDIC stated that despite attempts to cooperate, Box Mall allegedly demanded removal within three days in early 2025 or face dismantling. The NGO resolved to relocate assets to Akodo Ise, Ibeju-Lekki, and formally notified Box Mall on 31 March 2025. However, SOL Beach management reportedly demanded rental payments for alleged evacuation delays.
SOL Beach management insisted on removal of assets citing expired timelines and imposed a ₦150,000 daily rental charge effective April 14, 2025, for remaining assets. MEDIC counters that no agreed timelines existed and assets were detained by SOL Beach.
Founded in 2011, MEDIC is recognized for tree planting, recycling, and ocean conservation work. Its Kids Beach Garden project educates children, empowers women/youth through green jobs, and implements tree adoption and coastal restoration programs with local/international partners.
