The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has criticized Vice President Kashim Shettima over his recent comments targeting Kemi Badenoch, the UK Conservative Party leader of Nigerian descent. The group described Shettima’s remarks as a diversion from the real issues plaguing the country, urging Nigerian leaders to focus on addressing systemic failures rather than attacking critics.
Badenoch, who spent part of her childhood in Lagos, has often spoken about Nigeria’s insecurity, corruption, and governance issues. In a recent interview, she described Nigeria as a place “where almost everything seemed broken.” She recounted personal experiences, including her family’s struggles during military dictatorship and economic mismanagement. She also highlighted instances of police extortion, including a case where officers allegedly robbed her brother.
These remarks sparked backlash, including a statement from Shettima suggesting that Badenoch remove “Kemi” from her name if she felt ashamed of her Nigerian heritage. Shettima accused Badenoch of denigrating her country of origin, comparing her unfavorably to other leaders of immigrant backgrounds, such as Rishi Sunak, who he claimed had never criticized his Indian ancestry.
HURIWA defended Badenoch, stating that her criticisms are based on undeniable realities. The organization questioned which aspects of Badenoch’s statements were untrue, asserting that her experiences mirror those of countless Nigerians. HURIWA emphasized that instead of addressing the root causes of these issues, leaders like Shettima waste valuable time and resources attacking individuals who speak out.
The group pointed to recent cases of police misconduct in Nigeria as evidence supporting Badenoch’s claims. “In Abuja, four officers were recently suspended for stealing ₦43.16 million from a recovered fund. In Lagos, police officers reportedly extorted ₦1 million from three corps members, while in Enugu, officers allegedly kidnapped a man and forced him to withdraw ₦1 million at a Point of Sale terminal. Other incidents include cases of officers stealing from petty traders, students, and residents in Bayelsa, Delta, and Niger states. These alleged acts of extortion, along with other forms of police brutality, have continued unabated despite public outcry, including the #EndSARS protests in 2020”, HURIWA highlighted.
HURIWA also highlighted Nigeria’s poor global rankings in security and governance, noting that the country remains one of the most terrorized nations in the world. “With rampant kidnappings and violent attacks, citizens live in constant fear. Even politicians and elites who are expected to connect with their constituents avoid traveling without heavy security due to the pervasive insecurity. The organization stressed that Nigeria’s challenges stem from a governance system hijacked by corrupt individuals, which has turned governance into a gangster-like operation.
The group expressed disappointment that rather than addressing these systemic issues, Shettima has chosen to engage in a media war with Badenoch. HURIWA argued that this approach not only wastes public resources but also reflects poorly on Nigeria’s leadership. At a time when the country faces significant economic and social challenges, leaders should be prioritizing solutions rather than engaging in verbal spats.
While HURIWA supports Badenoch’s right to free expression, it urged her to demonstrate maturity and balance in her criticisms. The organization acknowledged that Badenoch’s observations about Nigeria’s challenges are valid but advised her to avoid prolonging discussions in a manner that could appear uncharitable. The association added that Badenoch, despite holding multiple passports, remains a person of Nigerian descent and should exhibit respect and decorum when discussing her country of origin.
HURIWA also called on Badenoch to focus on her responsibilities as the leader of the UK’s Conservative Party, which faces significant internal challenges. The group noted that prolonged discussions about Nigeria could distract her from addressing pressing issues within her party. At the same time, HURIWA emphasized that Nigerian leaders should refrain from further public exchanges with Badenoch and instead channel their energies toward addressing the country’s systemic failures.
The organization highlighted the urgent need for comprehensive reforms to rebuild public trust and improve governance in Nigeria. It stressed that police reform is critical to eliminating misconduct and extortion. “Addressing insecurity and improving public safety should be prioritized, while efforts must be made to overhaul the political recruitment process to ensure competent and ethical leaders are elected”, HURIWA urged.
HURIWA concluded by urging Nigerian leaders to accept constructive criticism and use it as an opportunity for growth. The focus, the group insisted, should be on addressing the root causes of Nigeria’s problems and rebuilding the country’s institutions.
“Kemi Badenoch has simply held up a mirror to Nigeria, and the reflection is unflattering. Instead of attacking her, our leaders must confront the harsh realities she has highlighted and take decisive steps to build a better future for all Nigerians,” the organization said.
