A heartbreaking incident has unfolded in New York, USA, where 1-year-old Imani Mitchell tragically lost her life after her mother’s boyfriend allegedly beat her severely, resulting in a fatal head injury .
The Alleged Incident
According to authorities, Jerome Thomas, 19, was caring for the infant when the alleged assault occurred on August 28. Thomas reportedly struck Imani twice on the side of the head with a “heavy hand,” causing her to cry. The infant suffered severe injuries, including “extensive subdural hemorrhaging on the right side of her head resulting in swelling and intracranial pressure causing brain herniation”.
The Aftermath
Imani underwent surgery to remove a portion of her skull and was placed on life support measures. Unfortunately, doctors were unable to save her, and she was pronounced dead on September 5. The New York Police Department ruled her death a homicide.
Arrest and Charges
Jerome Thomas was arrested on August 29 and charged with felony assault, reckless endangerment, and endangering the welfare of a child. He has been held without bail on Rikers Island, and his charges may be upgraded pending a grand jury indictment.
Neighbor’s Account
A neighbor, Nicole LaCroix, described the couple and the infant as new to the building. She had spent time with them, showing them around the neighborhood, and had even held the baby. LaCroix mentioned hearing arguments coming from the apartment, saying, “They fight every night… Several times she put his clothes out, but they’d be back together the same day”.

Thomas is scheduled to appear in court on September 18. The case is ongoing, and authorities are continuing their investigation .
