Labour Party’s Datti Baba-Ahmed has accused Independent National Electoral Commission Chairman, Mahmood Yakubu, of constitutional breaches during the 2023 presidential election. In a recent interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Baba-Ahmed alleged that the election was rigged and called for a credible individual to lead INEC ahead of the 2027 polls. This development raises further questions about the electoral process and the role of INEC in ensuring free and fair elections in Nigeria.
He said, “A credible person, that’s all I want and not someone who will clearly read what the constitution provides 25 per cent in at least 2/3 of the states of the federation including the FCT and go ahead to breach the Constitution, put Nigeria in what it is today.
“If you recall, I told you that throughout history, individuals make or break nations, this man is going to be responsible for what has happened, it’s wrong.
“Another arm of government upheld what he did, as small as I am and by the service of God Almighty, it’s wrong what they upheld.
“The court has the power to say that you are wrong even if you are not wrong and we were not wrong, that election was rigged, up till now the results are not consistent with the Nigerian Constitution.”
