Police Dismiss, To Prosecute Officers Over Fatal Effurun Shooting

38

The Nigeria Police Force has ordered the dismissal and prosecution of officers linked to the fatal shooting of Mr. Mene Ogidi in Effurun, Delta State, on 26 April 2026.

In an update issued Tuesday, Force Public Relations Officer DCP Anthony Okon Placid said the action follows the conclusion of expedited disciplinary proceedings against all officers connected to the incident.

Sequel to an earlier directive by the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, the officers were immediately withdrawn from the Delta State Command and transferred to Force Headquarters, Abuja, for investigation.

The Force Disciplinary Committee (FDC) found that the principal officer, ASP Nuhu Usman, acted in “gross violation of Force Order 237 and other regulations governing the use of firearms.” The FDC described his actions as “unlawful, unprofessional, and a clear betrayal of the oath to protect life and uphold the law.”

Based on the FDC’s recommendations, the IGP has approved the immediate dismissal of ASP Usman and other officers found culpable. The recommendations have been forwarded to the Police Service Commission for ratification, in line with due process.

Once administrative procedures are completed, the affected officers will be handed over to the appropriate judicial authorities for prosecution over their roles in the extrajudicial shooting.

“The Nigeria Police Force maintains a zero-tolerance stance on extra-judicial actions and abuse of power,” IGP Disu stated. “No uniform confers the right to take life outside the provisions of the law. Any officer who violates this fundamental principle will face the full weight of disciplinary and legal consequences.”

The IGP extended “deepest and most solemn condolences” to the family of Mr. Mene Ogidi. “We acknowledge the pain and loss suffered. This tragic incident will not be treated lightly. The Force is fully committed to ensuring that justice is not only served but seen to be served, in a manner that reinforces public confidence and institutional accountability.”

The Force appealed to members of the public to remain calm and law-abiding, reaffirming its commitment to discipline, professionalism, and the protection of the rights and dignity of all citizens.
