A 34-year-old woman in the US state of Arizona has been accused of attempting to kill her husband by lacing his coffee with bleach on a daily basis for several months, reported CNN.
Melody Felicano Johnson from Tucson has been indicted by a grand jury on attempted first-degree murder, attempted aggravated assault, and adding poison to food or drink after her husband sent a video to police of her apparently pouring bleach into his coffee pot.
According to court documents obtained by CNN affiliate KVOA, the husband, Roby Johnson, started experiencing a foul taste in his coffee in March when both of them were stationed in Germany. Roby Johnson, who serves in the US Air Force, noticed unusually high chlorine levels in his coffee pot using pool testing strips.
To uncover the truth, Roby Johnson set up a hidden camera and discovered his wife pouring an unknown substance into the coffee maker. Astonishingly, he decided to continue drinking the coffee in order to gather evidence before filing a police report once they returned to Davis Monthan Air Force Base in the US.
Upon returning to the US, Roby Johnson used multiple hidden cameras over several days and captured footage of Melody pouring bleach into a container and then adding it to the coffee maker. Investigators believe that she was attempting to kill him in order to collect death benefits.
Court records reveal that her bond has been set at $250,000. Prosecutors argued for a high bond, citing Melody Johnson’s recent purchase of a house in the Philippines near her family and the potential risk of her fleeing the country.
