A devastating incident at a Tokyo spa facility has claimed the lives of a couple, Yoko Matsuda, 37, and her husband Masanari Matsuda, 36, who were trapped inside a private sauna room during a fire. The pair, who ran a beauty salon, had booked the room at Sauna Tiger in Akasaka district.
The Incident
On Monday, the couple was found collapsed near the door, with investigators suspecting a faulty door handle may have hindered their escape. The sauna’s emergency alarm system was reportedly switched off for two years, and a burnt towel suggests the fire may have started from contact with hot stones.
Investigation & Response
Police are probing the incident, with Sauna Tiger expressing condolences and cooperating with authorities. The facility has closed temporarily and will refund customers. The tragedy has sparked concerns over safety standards in private saunas, which have grown in popularity post-pandemic.
