Senate Minority Leader, Senator Abba Moro, has hinted that former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, and ex-President Goodluck Jonathan might contest the 2027 presidential election under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Moro disclosed that talks are ongoing to lure both Obi and Jonathan back to the party.
He confirmed that certain individuals are speaking to the duo to encourage them to return to the party.
“So, in the run-up to 2027, I am aware certain individuals have been talking to Peter Obi, ‘Hey, come back home, this is what we are likely to do, and if you come, you stand a chance of being the candidate,” Moro said.
When asked about the possibilities of ex-President Jonathan returning to the PDP, Senator Moro said, “Some persons are talking to the former president to come and run. It is a possibility.”
PDP’s Zoning Decision
The PDP’s National Executive Committee (NEC) recently zoned the presidential ticket to the South, paving the way for Obi and Jonathan to throw their hats into the ring. This move has boosted their chances of securing the party’s nomination.¹
Peter Obi’s Presidential Ambition
Obi has expressed interest in the 2027 presidential race, but it’s unclear which party he’ll represent. Some PDP stakeholders believe Obi’s popularity makes him a viable candidate. Meanwhile, former President Jonathan’s loyalists are pushing for his return to the PDP, suggesting he could be a stronger candidate in the North.²
Potential Jonathan-Obi Alliance
However, there’s speculation that Jonathan might offer Obi a ministerial slot in exchange for backing his presidential bid. This potential alliance could significantly impact the 2027 election dynamics.³
Implications for the 2027 Election
The PDP’s decision to zone the presidency to the South has significant implications for the party’s chances in the 2027 election. With Obi and Jonathan potentially in the mix, the party’s nomination process is likely to be highly competitive.
