Operatives of the Bauchi State Police Command have arrested six suspected internet fraudsters for kidnapping a 400-level student of the Bauchi State University, Gadau (BASUG), Ojo Tobi David.
Spokesperson of the command, SP Ahmed Mohammed Wakil, who disclosed this in a statement on Tuesday, June 13, 2023, said the suspects kidnapped the student as a result of a misunderstanding over the sharing of $33800 obtained in the fraud transaction.
According to the PPRO, one of the suspects, Damilola James, fell while trying to escape and was taken to the hospital for immediate medical attention but was certified dead by a medical doctor.
“Based on inter-agency collaboration towards implementing constitutional mandates of the Police as a leading Agency in maintaining the internal security, six (6) suspects were handed over to the command by operatives attached to the 133 SF Battalion based in Azare, Bauchi state,” the statement read.
“The suspects kidnapped one Ojo Tobi David ‘m’ age 23yrs old a 400 Level student of SLT Bauchi State University, Gadau (BASUG) from Federal Low Cost of Azare town, Bauchi State.
“After kidnapping the victim, the suspects snatched a Toyota Camry 2010 with Reg No.KYW-925-SB belonging to one Amaechi Ikechukwu of the same address which was forcefully colleted and took their victim inside swiftly heading to Misau Road Azare.
“On receipt of the distress call, the soldiers stationed at Azare/Misau military checkpoint responded immediately and intercepted the stolen vehicle alongside the suspects, meanwhile, the victim was rescued unhurt.
He gave the names of the suspects arrested as: Hassan Mohammed ‘m’ aged 27yrs of Chilankori Azare town, Abdul Karim Gobir ‘m’ aged 21yrs a 300 level student of Human physiology, BASUG, Ibrahim Yusuf ‘m’ aged 23yrs a 400 level student of physiology, BASUG, Peter Femi ‘m’ aged 28yrs of Turum area Bauchi and Samuel Abimbola ‘m’ aged 23yrs of Turum area Bauchi.
Consequently, the following items were found in their possession which includes; 4 iPhone, 4 Android Phones, one Tecno keypad phone, one power bank, two chargers, one FCMB Bank ATM card, one Zenith Bank ATM card, two bunch of keys, three vehicle tickets, three bags, a Toyota Camry with reg no. KYW 925 SB and assorted charms.
“However, one of the suspects Damilola James M of Turum area of Bauchi fell while trying to escape. He was taken to Federal Medical Center (FMC) Azare for immediate medical attention but was certified dead by a medical doctor,”
“A preliminary investigation at Divisional Police Headquarters Azare indicates that the crux of the matter was a result of a misunderstanding over the sharing of 3800 US Dollars obtained in the Yahoo transaction. The case will transfer to State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) Bauchi for further investigation.”
