Photos: Abuja-Kaduna Train Derailment Sparks Panic Among Passengers

1534

A passenger train traveling from Abuja to Kaduna derailed on Tuesday morning, leaving several carriages overturned and triggering widespread panic among those on board. The incident occurred shortly after the train departed Abuja around 11 a.m., en route to Kaduna. According to eyewitnesses, the scene was chaotic, with people scrambling to safety in fear and confusion.

Investigation and Response

The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has launched an investigation into the derailment, although it’s unclear if this incident is related to previous derailments. In a similar incident on May 27, 2024, a train derailed at the Jere station, with the NSIB attributing the cause to track conditions. Military personnel have been deployed to the site to assist in evacuating stranded passengers. The NSIB will examine factors such as the train’s speed, track conditions, mechanical components, and operational procedures to determine the cause of the derailment.
