Pep Guardiola Overtakes Alex Ferguson In Champions League Wins

78

Manchester City manager, Pep Guardiola has overtaken former Manchester United manager, Sir Alex Ferguson in terms of the number of Champions League wins in history.

Before Manchester City played German Bundesliga club, RB Leipzig at the Red Bull Arena Leipzig on Wednesday, October 4, Pep Guardiola and Ferguson had the same number of total Champions League wins.

Thanks to goals from Phil Foden, Julián Álvarez and Jérémy Doku, Manchester City beat RB Leipzig 3-1 in Germany which didn’t only leave City on top of Group G, it helped Guardiola to overtake Ferguson in the winners’ chart.

Recall that before Sir Alex Ferguson retired from coaching in 2013, the Scottish legendary tactician recorded 102 UEFA Champions League wins in 190 games. Since then, he has been the coach with the highest number of wins in the prestigious competition until last season when current Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti overtook him.

Hence, before the commencement of this season, Sir Ferguson was the second coach in history with the highest number of wins in the Champions, while Ancelotti who currently have 109 wins in 190 games remains number one.

However, that has changed slightly as Pep Guardiola is now the second coach in history in the winners’ chart. The 52-year-old Spanish tactician now has 103 wins in 161 Champions League wins.

Guardiola who has coached FC Barcelona where he won two Champions League trophies, Bayern Munich, and now Manchester City where he has won one Champions League trophy, has recorded 33 draws and 25 defeats in the competition.

Other coaches in the top six chart of coaches with the highest number of wins in the Champions League are Arsene Wenger with 82 wins in 188 games, Jose Mourinho with 77 wins in 151 games, and Jurgen Klopp with 58 wins in 102 games.
