The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is reportedly considering three prominent Southerners for its 2027 presidential ticket, according to Senate Minority Leader Abba Moro. The potential candidates are:
– Former President Goodluck Jonathan: A seasoned politician with extensive experience in governance.
– Peter Obi: The ex-Labour Party presidential candidate known for his progressive policies.
– Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State: A leader with a strong track record in state governance.
Moro made this revelation during an appearance on AIT’s Focus Nigeria program, hinting that more names will emerge soon. This development marks a significant step in the PDP’s presidential nomination process for 2027. The party’s decision will likely be influenced by various factors, including the candidates’ popularity, policy proposals, and leadership abilities
He said: “Some names have been thrown up now that the position has been zoned to the South and all the names have been members of the PDP. Peter Obi because of the perceived unfair treatment of not zoning the position of the president to the South and possibly to the Southeast left PDP. And now the PDP has zoned the position to the South.
“And so Peter Obi you are from the South, left PDP because of the perceived injustice and unfair treatment, now that the thing has been zoned to the South you are welcome to join the race.
“The former president, Goodluck Jonathan is a bona fide and an imminent member of PDP, a statesman per say has been mentioned, Seyi Makinde, the governor of Oyo State has also been mentioned.
“I can assure you that going forward, many more names are going to be mentioned because I insist that PDP as a grassrooted political party has many qualified, imminent and qualified Nigerians from the South that can give a shot at the presidency.
“So let’s watch and see, persuasions are on, contacts are been made, at the end of the day, we will find out who and who is in the running and we will present a candidate that will give the ruling party a run for its money.
“I’m very sure that those people who moved to the ADC especially from the South felt short changed by the 2022 zoning of the party – throwing the position open which created some problems for the party, problems that the PDP is trying to find a solution to.”
