A Nigerian woman, known only as Peace, has shared the traumatic experience of being sentenced to death by hanging in Malaysia for unknowingly trafficking drugs. The incident occurred after her husband, Mr. George, persuaded her to join him in Malaysia under the guise of seeking medical treatment for a painful eye condition while pregnant with their second child.
Peace’s nightmare began when she traveled to Malaysia in 2011, unaware that her husband had hidden drugs in her luggage. Upon arrival at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport, she was caught with a substantial amount of methamphetamine, a hard drug commonly known as ecstasy.
The Trial and Sentence
Despite Peace’s claims that she was unaware of the drugs in her possession, she was found guilty of drug trafficking and sentenced to death by hanging, a punishment mandated under Malaysia’s strict anti-drug laws. According to Section 39B(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, trafficking drugs carries a mandatory death penalty upon conviction.
A Glimmer of Hope
Peace’s case drew attention, and she mentioned being freed after former US President Barack Obama intervened. However, details about the intervention and her release are scarce.³
Malaysian Drug Laws
Malaysia’s anti-drug laws are notoriously strict, with severe penalties for those found guilty of trafficking. The laws have led to numerous cases of foreigners, including Nigerians, being sentenced to death for drug-related offenses.
– Notable Cases:
– Mary George Unazi: A 30-year-old Nigerian student sentenced to death in 2015 for trafficking 765.9 grams of methamphetamine.
– Ekene Collins Isaac: A 37-year-old Nigerian man sentenced to death in 2015 for smuggling 915.6 grams of methamphetamine.
– Luke Nnaemeka Ugwu: A 29-year-old Nigerian student sentenced to death in 2015 for trafficking 725.4 grams of methamphetamine.⁴
Peace’s story highlights the dangers of getting entangled in drug trafficking and the severe consequences of Malaysia’s strict laws. Her experience serves as a cautionary tale for travelers and foreigners visiting the country.
