The Lagos State Police Command has apprehended a 28-year-old notorious armed robber, hired assassin, and murderer, John Samuel, in his hideout at Epe. Samuel, an ex-convict from Akwa Ibom State, was recently released from prison after serving a six-year jail term for armed robbery. However, he quickly returned to his life of crime, committing even more heinous acts.
The Incident
On August 18, 2025, Samuel shot and wounded businessman Gbenga Obama in broad daylight at Gbajobi Street, Allen Avenue, Ikeja, robbing him of an expensive gold necklace and other valuables. CCTV footage captured the incident, showing Samuel firing an English pistol at Obama before dispossessing him of his jewelry. An accomplice waited on a motorcycle nearby, facilitating their escape.
Investigation and Arrest
The police tracked Samuel down to his hideout in Epe, where he was arrested on September 19, 2025. During interrogation, Samuel confessed to selling the stolen jewelry for ₦4 million, significantly below its actual value. The police are now intensifying efforts to arrest other members of his gang and bring them to justice.¹ ²
Police Reaction
Lagos State Commissioner of Police, CP Olohudare Jimoh, commended the operatives for their gallantry and commitment to the successful arrest. He assured Lagosians that discreet investigations are ongoing into the case and warned that all perpetrators will face the full weight of the law.
