Insecurity: Boko Haram Haram Attack Military Base In Bornu


Multiple sources fear that Boko Haram terrorists might have killed a top commander of the Nigerian Army after the insurgents attacked a military base in Borno State.

The insurgents launched a daring attack on a military base in Mainok, Borno state, on Sunday and there are fears that an Army commander on the rank of a lieutenant-colonel might have been killed during the attack.

Apart from the commander, not fewer than 13 soldiers also reportedly lost their lives during the encounter.

The sources claimed that the insurgents stormed the military base around 2pm on Sunday with heavy weapons and overpowered the soldiers after disguising themselves as a military convoy to gain access to the premises.

Upon entry into the base, they opened fire on the unsuspecting soldiers.

“They had four MRAPs [armoured military vehicles], four gun trucks and other heavy machines,” one of the sources quoted by The Cable said.

“As I speak, the commanding officer has been hit, and some other soldiers.

“There was air support, but sadly, the air force missed its coordinates and couldn’t eliminate the insurgents.”

Another source also claimed that “the troops have been dislodged from the camp as the insurgents are taking over.”

The insurgents, who were said to have stormed the base at about 2pm on Sunday, disguised in a military convoy and gained access into the premises before shooting sporadically and killing the soldiers.

It was gathered the insurgents who operated for about two hours, also razed down a police station and looted weapons at the military base before escaping the scene.

When contacted, the spokesperson for the Nigerian Army, Brigadier General Mohammed Yerima, said an update on the attack will be provided later.
