Four Killed, Others Injured In Niger Mining Explosion

167

An explosion at a mining site in Sabon Pegi, Mashegun Local Government Area of Niger State, claimed the lives of four people and left several others injured on Sunday morning.

The incident occurred as miners resumed work for the day. While the exact cause of the explosion remains unclear, residents suspect it may have been caused by poor handling of explosive devices used by mining companies.

Community sources confirmed to Vanguard the recovery of four bodies, though the total number of casualties is yet to be determined. Authorities fear that more fatalities may emerge as investigations continue.

A local resident, Aminu, described the widespread panic caused by the explosion: “The explosion was so loud that many thought it came from the hydroelectricity dam nearby. Everyone ran into the bush for safety.”

Another resident suggested that the blast was likely related to mining operations rather than any terrorist activity.

Serious mining activities have been ongoing in the area for a long time, and this appears to be an operational issue,” the resident stated.

As of the time of reporting, neither the Niger State government nor security agencies have issued an official statement.

Further updates are expected as investigations progress into the cause of the explosion and its impact on the community.
