Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike has criticized activist and African Action Congress Presidential Candidate Omoyele Sowore for describing President Bola Tinubu as a “criminal”. Sowore made the remark in an August 25 tweet, referencing a video of Tinubu claiming there was no corruption in Nigeria during a visit to Brazil. Wike responded during the flag-off of the Arterial Road N1 construction in Wuye, Abuja, on September 18.
Wike’s Reaction
Wike stated that Sowore was “lucky” to have a President who respects the rule of law, allowing him to express his opinions freely. “This is a country where somebody on social media will say Mr. President is a criminal; nothing will happen,” Wike said. He contrasted this with the United States, where he claimed citizens wouldn’t dare insult their President in such a manner.¹
Background to the Controversy
The Department of State Services had filed criminal charges against Sowore for defamation, alleging he used false statements violating Nigeria’s Cybercrimes and Terrorism Prevention laws. The agency also requested social media platforms X and Meta to remove the tweet, citing threats to national security and public order. Sowore refused to delete the tweet, accusing the DSS of attempting to silence dissent.²
Wike’s Stance on FCT Doctors’ Strike
During the same event, Wike addressed the indefinite strike by the FCT Chapter of the Association of Resident Doctors. He explained that the administration allocated N25 billion to the health sector in the 2025 budget and urged the doctors to exercise patience, citing established procedures for payment of allowances and employment of doctors.
