Comrade Jeremiah Obaji, an Ebonyi native residing in Lagos, has received a ₦10 million cash gift from Governor Francis Nwifuru after completing a remarkable 17-day, 600km trek from Ikorodu, Lagos, to Abakaliki. Obaji’s journey was a gesture of gratitude to the governor for restoring peace in Effium community.
The Trek
Obaji set out on August 21 and arrived on September 7, covering over 600 kilometers on foot. He described the effort as his “sacrifice of gratitude” for the governor’s intervention in the Ezza-Effium conflict through the establishment of five autonomous communities. Obaji had previously criticized the governor on social media, unaware that he would be the one to bring peace to his community.
Challenges Faced
During the trek, Obaji faced numerous challenges, including hunger, fatigue, insect bites, and fear of kidnapping. At one point, he had to abandon his jeans due to blisters.
Online Reaction
As news of his trek spread online, admirers offered various gifts, including a car, landed property, and financial support. Governor Nwifuru praised Obaji’s act, citing it as proof of the impact of his administration’s People’s Charter of Needs policy.
₦10 Million Gift
The governor announced the ₦10 million reward to support Obaji’s recovery and encourage his advocacy for peace. However, Obaji emphasized that his mission extends beyond material gains, stating, “I am not hungry. God has blessed me in business. What I want now is to become an ambassador of peace.”
Plans for Peace Foundation
Obaji revealed plans to launch a Peace Foundation dedicated to promoting non-violence and assisting children displaced by conflict. The foundation aims to promote peace and stability in the community.
