March 18, 2023 is an unforgettable day of sorrow and lamentations in Nigeria, especially in Lagos. It was a day when desperate politicians and their goons who had been rejected by the electorate resorted to whipping up primordial ethnic sentiments and empowered barefaced criminals to unleash mayhem on a particular ethnic group in order for the APC governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu to win re-election. Re-election?
Recall how INEC shamelessly subverted its own laws and procedures to declare Bola Tinubu, the APC candidate the winner of the February 25th presidential election. It was this brazen travesty that emboldened ethnic bigots and revisionists to attack and intimidate voters in order to win Lagos for their ‘godfather’. Any other contestant was tagged “Igbo” in order to destroy their chances.
Ironically, these are people whose kinsmen live, own property, do business and even vote in foreign countries without molestation. Every conscious and right thinking person knows how easily ethnic profiling can lead to unmitigated violence and devastation. Nigerians must therefore rise and ensure that this preposterous rascality is condemned and people held accountable for the sake of peace, progress and posterity.
