A chieftain of the All Progressive Congress, APC, in Anambra state Dr. Kodilichukwu Okelekwe, says the choice of the party’s candidate in this year’s November governorship poll will determine how well the party will perform at the polls.
Okelekwe made his position known in a press statement made available to lagoscityreporters.com, where he also suggested that the party will need to mobilise adequate resources to clinch power at the state Guber poll.
Part of the statement reads: “As the All Progressives Congress (APC) prepares for the crucial governorship election in Anambra State on November 8, the importance of electing the right candidate cannot be overstated.”
“This choice will not only define the party’s immediate prospects but also set the tone for its long-term legacy in the state. Therefore, it is imperative that the APC prioritizes integrity, sound knowledge, approachability, hard work, adequate resources, and electability in its candidate selection process.”
The former party candidate in the 2023 senatorial polls in Anambra Central also highlighted integrity as a strong foundation for consideration for the choice of the party Guber candidate.
Okelekwe said: “Integrity stands as the cornerstone of effective leadership. In a time when public trust in politicians is waning, the APC must choose a candidate who embodies honesty and transparency. An aspirant with a track record of integrity will not only inspire confidence among party members but will also attract the electorate who yearn for a leader they can trust.”
“A candidate who upholds ethical standards can foster a culture of accountability that resonates throughout the governance structure.”
“Sound knowledge of the local issues and the political landscape is equally critical. An ideal candidate should possess a deep understanding of Anambra’s challenges and opportunities. This knowledge equips him or her to craft practical solutions that address the needs of the populace.” He also stated.
“A leader who is well-versed in the intricacies of governance and policy-making can navigate the complexities of state administration more effectively, ensuring that the interests of the citizens are prioritized.”
“Approachability is another vital trait. In a world where leaders often seem distant and disconnected from their constituents, the APC needs a candidate who is relatable and open to dialogue.”
“An approachable leader can bridge the gap between the government and the people, fostering a sense of community and cooperation. This connection not only builds goodwill but also enables the leader to stay attuned to the needs and aspirations of his or her constituents.”
“Hard work is non-negotiable in the quest for effective governance. The challenges faced by Anambra are significant and require a candidate who is committed to putting in the necessary effort to bring about change. A hardworking leader who is willing to roll up their sleeves and engage with the communities will instil a sense of hope and determination among the citizens. This dedication to service can galvanize the electorate, turning passive supporters into active participants in the democratic process.”
“Furthermore, the availability of adequate resources is essential for any successful campaign. The APC must ensure that its chosen candidate has access to the necessary tools—be it financial backing, grassroots networks, or strategic advice—to run an effective campaign. A well-resourced candidate can amplify his or her message, reach a wider audience, and ultimately enhance his or her chances of success at the polls.”
Lastly, electability must be a key consideration. A candidate’s ability to resonate with the electorate and appeal to a broad spectrum of voters is crucial. The APC needs a candidate who cannot only win the party’s primary but also unify various factions within the party and attract undecided voters. This requires a leader who can effectively communicate a vision for Anambra that aligns with the hopes and dreams of its citizens.
“In conclusion, as the APC gears up for this pivotal election, the weight of the decision regarding its governorship candidate cannot be underestimated. By focusing on integrity, sound knowledge, approachability, hard work, adequate resources, and electability, the party can position itself for success. A well-chosen candidate will not only enhance the APC’s chances on November 8 but will also lay the groundwork for a brighter future for Anambra State. The time to act is now, and the responsibility lies with the party to organise free, fair, and credible primaries to elect a candidate who embodies these essential qualities. The people of Anambra are ready for change, and with the right candidate, that change is within reach.”
