Golden Eaglets coach Nduka Ugbade has confirmed his team still have a chance to progress to the quarter-final of the AFCON U-17.
The 53-year-old tactician stated this in a post-match press conference. Nigeria on Wednesday lost 1-0 to Morocco, through an owngoal by defender Tochukwu Ogboji. But the Golden Eaglets dominated the encounter, maintaining 75% of the possessions.
But, failed to capitalize on their numerous chances created. The Nduka Ugbade’s boys had a total of 27 shots, with just four on target. And none of the four, ended up in the opposition’s net.
“Everything worked absolutely well. We controlled the game but tactically Morocco controlled the outcome,” Nduka said and was quoted by CAF Online.
“We had some few mistakes as well but we created so many chances, and the only problem is that we couldn’t score.”
He added; “It does happen in football. It is not a strange thing, but it is important to correct and ensure we are more efficient infront of goal.”
And Nigeria in a bid to qualify, are now faced with a must win tie against perennial rival South Africa. And the last match of the group will affirm an automatic ticket to the quarters for the winner.
“We must be more efficient with the chances we have. And we will try to look for some different ways tactically to impact the outcome of the game. We have a chance, but also, that chance can fade away. So, we have to work hard,” the coach noted.
And the Nigeria match will happen on Saturday, at the Mohammed Hamlaoui Stadium, Constantine Algeria.
A draw will see the two teams progress to the quarterfinals. And have their foot on step into qualifying for the FIFA U-17 World Cup.
