The Federal High Court in Abuja has granted former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai bail in the sum of N100 million with one surety in like sum, over charges of an alleged breach of national security filed by the Department of State Services (DSS).
El-Rufai, who previously stated on national television that he had wiretapped National Security Adviser Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, appeared before Justice Joyce Abdulmalik on Monday. The judge granted bail but imposed strict conditions for its perfection.
Under the ruling, the surety must be a federal civil servant of Grade Level 17 or above, residing in Maitama or Asokoro, Abuja. The surety is required to deposit the original Certificate of Occupancy for a landed property with the court registry, submit proof of salary payments for the last three months, and provide an authentication letter from their bank manager.
The court also directed the surety to swear an affidavit of means, sign a bail bond, and submit a recent passport photograph.
Additional conditions include presenting a verification letter from the surety’s department, a tax clearance certificate for the past six months, and a letter of attestation from the Chairman of the Kaduna State Traditional Council.
El-Rufai was ordered to surrender all valid passports to the court. He must also report to DSS headquarters on the last Friday of every month by 10 a.m. to sign an attendance register until the conclusion of the case.
Justice Abdulmalik warned that any breach of the bail terms would lead to immediate revocation. The court further ordered an accelerated hearing of the matter.
The DSS is prosecuting the former governor over allegations of actions it says compromised national security.
