At least 14 passengers, including several candidates travelling to sit for the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, JAMB, examination, have been abducted by gunmen along the Makurdi–Otukpo road in Benue State.
The victims were in an 18-seater Benue Links bus heading from Makurdi to Otukpo Local Government Area on Wednesday evening when they were ambushed a few kilometres from Otukpo town at about 7pm.
Benue State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Ifeanyi Emenari, confirmed the incident on Thursday. He said tactical teams and Divisional Police Officers have been deployed to the area to lead rescue operations.
The command has intensified efforts to ensure the safe return of the victims, Emenari added.
The Commissioner also raised concerns about the timing of the trip, noting that Benue Links Transport Company does not operate night services. Investigations into the incident are ongoing, he said, while reaffirming the police’s commitment to apprehending the abductors and securing the victims’ release.
