Arise News Anchor Constance Ikokwu Joins Politics
Arise News Anchor and Analyst Dr. Chiogo Constance Ikokwu has announced her leave of absence from the profession to join politics.

Respected, and known for her strong track record in holding power to account and amplifying public interest issues, Dr. Ikokwu said the move is driven by firsthand experience of governance gaps, and knowledge that our country is strengthened when thoughtful, competent people step in to contribute, not stand on the sidelines.

The decision reflects a growing sentiment that professionals with ideas, integrity, and a deep understanding of societal challenges should take a more active role in shaping policy and leadership, rather than remaining observers from the sidelines.

Dr. Ikokwu who is from Idemili North and South Federal Constituency hopes to be given a chance to represent her community in the House of Representatives.

According to her “This transition is, for me, a continuation of service, just on a different platform. I have had the privilege of telling the stories that shape our nation, holding power to account, amplifying underrepresented voices, and helping citizens make sense of complex issues. This journey has sharpened my understanding of our country’s challenges and opportunities, and it has reinforced my belief that informed, ethical leadership is essential to progress. It is from this vantage point that I have made the difficult but necessary decision to step into the political arena.”

She continued “My experience as a journalist has not only given me insight into governance but has also connected me directly to the everyday realities of our people – their frustrations, resilience, and aspirations. I have seen firsthand where policy succeeds and where it falls short, and I believe that those who understand these gaps must be willing to step forward and help close them. Politics should not be left only to career politicians; it must also be shaped by individuals with fresh ideas, integrity, and a genuine commitment to public service.”

Dr. Ikokwu said that she hopes her decision sends a broader message that more Nigerians who care deeply about our future, and who possess the ideas and capacity to improve it, should consider active participation in politics. She noted that this is a defining moment in Nigeria, which calls for courage, and collective responsibility.

Dr. Ikokwu, a journalist, political analyst, media strategist, and deep thinker, has a PhD in Journalism and Communications. Her doctoral thesis was on the intersection of media and politics, specifically examining the concept of mediatization, and the role of media during elections. She taught Media courses at Institute for American Universities (IAU), Barcelona, Spain, and at the Universitat Autonoma de Barcelona Department of Journalism and Communication Sciences. Her work has taken her across Nigeria, Africa, Europe and the Americas. She was Washington, D.C. Bureau Chief for THISDAY Newspapers in 2007, and as such interviewed global personalities, and covered the world’s leading economic and political institutions such as the World Bank, IMF, US Congress, White House, United Nations, think-thanks, etc. In the course of her career, she has been Foreign Editor, Deputy Editor, Abuja Bureau Chief, Enugu Bureau Chief, Editorial Page Editor, member of the Editorial Board, Secretary to the Editorial Board, Online Editor, Strategic Communications Adviser, Radio host, and Television anchor.
