10

The House of Representatives on Wednesday, March 26, 2025, took a significant step toward constitutional reform as 42 amendment bills sailed through second reading, bringing the total for the week to 81.

One of the most notable bills seeks to strip the vice president, governors, and their deputies of the immunity that shields them from prosecution while in office. Proponents argue that this move will curb impunity, deter corruption, and ensure that public officials remain accountable for their actions.

Another landmark bill proposes the separation of the offices of the Attorney-General of the Federation and the states from those of the Minister of Justice and state Commissioners for Justice. With the aim to insulate the office of the Attorney-General from political influence.

Additionally, the House passed a bill granting citizenship rights to foreign spouses of Nigerian women.
