Woman Reportedly Sells Baby For N4m, Receives Meagre N600,000 From Transaction

A 26-year-old woman, Rachael, has revealed that she gave up her two-week-old baby for N600,000 due to financial difficulties.
Investigations showed that the baby was eventually sold for N4 million to a 42-year-old woman seeking to adopt a child.
However, Rachael only received N600,000 from the transaction.
Rachael, who resides in Asaba, Delta State, was paraded alongside two accomplices by the State Police Command. The Command’s Public Relations Officer, Bright Edafe, disclosed details of the case.

Speaking on her decision, Rachael explained that she already had an older son and was struggling to care for both children. She claimed the father of the newborn had denied responsibility, leaving her to fend for the baby alone.

“I gave the baby away because I was the only one providing for her,” Rachael said.
Describing how she survived during her pregnancy, she stated, “I worked hard, doing house chores in different compounds just to make ends meet.”
She further revealed that she was introduced to a woman who offered to assist her financially. In return, she received N600,000 and gave N30,000 back as a token of appreciation.
Meanwhile, the woman who facilitated the transaction admitted to selling the baby for N3.5 million while confirming that she gave the mother only N600,000. According to her, Rachael had expressed a desire to use the money to start a business.
The 42-year-old buyer, who paid N4 million for the child, claimed she had sought legal adoption. “I informed someone in my area that I wanted to adopt a child through the proper process,” she said, adding that she was assured the necessary documentation was being arranged.
Authorities are continuing their investigation into the case.
