The FCT Emergency Management Agency on Thursday confirmed the death of three people as a result of the flash flood in the Lokogoma area of the FCT, Abuja, the News Agency of Nigeria reports.

The Director-General, FEMA, Alhaji Idriss Abass, said a man and two of his children died when their Toyota Highlander SUV entered into the flood.

Abass said the tragedy, which was avoidable, happened between the hours of 7am and 9am on Thursday.

He said, “The flood submerged a bridge along the road. The man came with his children and was trying to pass through with his car.

“He was warned and at a point, he reversed. Unfortunately, he zoomed off again and the vehicle was submerged. They were trapped and drowned.”

He said the bodies of the victims, which were recovered by the locals before the arrival of FEMA, had been deposited in a mortuary in Jabi.

Abass said the agency had not been able to link up with the family of the deceased.

He explained that FEMA gathered that the family resided in Apo and the man was taking his children to a summer school when the incident happened.

He said the agency would incorporate local divers and swimmers as volunteers and teach them modern techniques.
